Peeps Shows

Peeps Shows

A Peeps Show is a diorama that recreates a historical event made from of  Marshmallow Peeps or Circus Peanuts.  You can choose any historical event covered in the book or in class.  Please let me know ahead of time what your Peeps Show will be by  Thursday, March 13.  I will not accept projects I have not been informed about beforehand.

I have added a few examples of A B C D and F work on Peeps Shows to give you an idea of what is expected:

The work below is an example of F work.   Some of the problems with this Peeps Show– which recreates the Trans-Altantic Slave Trade– is that the assignment calls for Marshmallow Peeps or Circus Peanuts, not real peanuts.  A second problem with this Peeps Show is that it is obviously created with very little effort.   Third, the Peeps Show is carelessly put together.  The quality of the work makes it obvious that the person did not do their best to create a well thought out, thoroughly completed Peeps Show.

Slaveship one Slaveship two

The work below is an example of D work.  This Peeps Show represents the Underground Railroad.  Although the person followed instructions by using Marshmallow Peeps and Circus Peanuts, the Peeps Show appears to be incomplete.  There is dead grass and dead leaves glued to the inside of the diorama, but nothing else to help make it look more creatively done and completely finished.

Underground Railroad 2

The following is C work.  This Peeps show is more complete, but what is problematic is that the person did not incorporate Marshmallow Peeps or Circus Peanuts into his/her work.  Additionally, instead of using items the person created him/herself, the Peeps Show is almost entirely made of items purchased from a craft store.  This is not acceptable.  If you wish to incorporate items from a craft store, you are limited to one and it must be decorated by you.

  Salem Witch Trials

Here is another example of C work.  The assignment is complete, but only at the most basic level.  The person who created this Peeps Show used a great deal of props purchased from a store and did not creatively complete the project.

Washington (3) Washington (2) Washington (1)

The following are an example of B work.  The project is complete, well-planned and well thought out.  The subject of this Peeps Show is an auction of enslaved people. I’d like to suggest that if you decide to include people of color in your Peeps Show, do not paint them black or brown.  It’s offensive.  There are many other creative ways to show racial difference.

Keep in mind that if you choose to use a computer box or any box larger than a shoe/boot box, you will have to make a large Peeps Show to make your project look finished.

Slave Auction Slave Auction 3 Slave Auction (2)

Finally, the following are A projects.  They are creatively done, complete, creative and well planned.  They are Washington Crossing the Delaware, Hernán Cortés meeting the Aztecs,  Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride and the Boston Tea Party.

Note that the person who did Cortés meeting the Aztecs made the difference between Europeans and Aztecs different clothing.  This is a much more creative (and less offensive) way to depict racial difference.

Hopefully this gives you a better idea of what Peeps Shows are to look like.

Please let me know what event you’re going to portray-from your class notes and your book(s)–by March 13.  If you have not texted me or emailed me what you plan to do, I will not give you credit for the completed project.

When you do turn in your project, please write your name in the upper right hand corner of your Peeps Show.  Be sure to attach a brief description of what you’ve created on a note card.

Be sure to take a picture of your diorama as proof you completed the assignment.

Please pay close attention to the deadlines as late assignments will not be accepted
